COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Silverstone Lite Inn in Sunnyside experienced 18 days without electricity after management turned off power and water, creating hardships during a bitter winter. Yakima County Human Services and Camp Hope restored power while tenants now face a 45-day transition as officials work to relocate them.  FOX 41

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire early Thursday on the 500 block of West Eye Street killed one person and led firefighters to urge residents to check their smoke detectors — officials discovered the home near Top Form Design Bike Shop lacked working alarms.  FOX 41
  • On Sunday, a snowmobile club on Potato Hill near Mount Adams found a man in medical distress and Yakima Search and Rescue responded despite delays caused by poor weather — they eventually stabilized him for hospital transport.  KIMA
  • A family's home was destroyed by a gas explosion on Wednesday in Moxee. Firefighters evacuated nearby residences and no one was injured; Brookside Funeral Home (500 W Prospect Road) serves as today’s drop-off for donations to help the displaced family rebuild.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

  • Fusion Dining LLC will open Washington's first combined Applebee's and IHOP restaurant in Grandview on Feb. 3. The grand opening will include a ribbon-cutting by the Grandview Chamber of Commerce and prizes for the first 100 attendees.  NonStopLocal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in several Yakima Valley districts will decide on school levies and bond measures on Feb. 10. Ballots are mailed around Jan. 23 and officials urge early return due to mail delays while noting that online registration ends Feb. 2 (in-person registration remains available until election day).  KIMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Agriculture will treat 12,889 properties in 2026, with 1,350 in King County and most in Yakima Valley, using Acelepryn to control Japanese beetles. Affected residents will receive letters soon (treatment consent dropped last year).  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Law enforcement installed Flock cameras at at least 87 known locations in Yakima, confirmed by police chief Shawn Boyle. At a Jan. 20 City Council meeting, resident Morgan Humes raised privacy concerns — while a new website now maps these reported sightings.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Yakima City Council approved a five-year operating agreement for the Yakima Trolley on Tuesday, Jan. 22 to secure its service while officials noted uncertainties about long-term funding. They continue to review strategy + potential changes for the system.  Apple Valley News Now

  • A backyard flock of chickens in Yakima County tested positive for bird flu, and the Yakima Health District is alerting those with close contact with birds (such as backyard flock owners, agricultural workers, and hunters) to watch for symptoms; the risk to the public remains low.  KIMA
