COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Yakima Valley Community Foundation welcomed four new board members today, adding (Briana Tamaki, Marthy Hernandez, Dr. Fotinos Panagakos, and Mike Preacher) to its 15-member board; their expertise spans philanthropy, law, health sciences and business.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • On Jan. 26 at 8:16 a.m., Yakima Police reminded residents that city ordinance prohibits owning roosters. Some locals replied online, with one remarking that police might start counting hens (others joked their pets were chickens, dogs or ducks).  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grandview is expanding its cemetery east of Willoughby Road because it has only two to three years of burial space remaining. Crews are preparing three interim sections to ensure uninterrupted services until the new area is ready + officials stress that families will not be impacted.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Rep. Dan Newhouse declared a state of emergency at the Yakima-Tieton canal today after officials determined the canal is at risk of imminent failure due to damage from the 2024 Retreat Fire plus a December atmospheric river event; the irrigation district has spent millions on repairs and installed debris fences to limit further erosion.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • No measles cases have been reported in Yakima yet but health officials are monitoring an outbreak in Snohomish county — one household has six cases including unvaccinated children.
