  • The International Paper Yakima Box facility in Union Gap will close by April 3, cutting 102 jobs as union leaders plan to meet with company officials to discuss the impact.  KIMA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jennifer King, the first Black woman assistant coach in the NFL, spoke in Yakima for Black History Month. She outlined her journey from a student-athlete to an NFL coach (she stressed that football is for everybody) to encourage local inclusivity in the sport.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Highland teacher John Straehle will be inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in February. He has taught band and choir for 36 years and built a music program that now features a growing marching band and choir.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Washington State will install new EV charging stations along I-90, US-97, US-195, and US-395 to offer fast 150 kilowatt charging at locations including Issaquah, North Bend, Cle Elum, Ellensburg, Moses Lake, Ritzville, and Veradale.   • Dry, warm January left the Yakima water supply basin with exceptionally low snow cover on Feb. 1, the lowest recorded since 2001 over 139,322 square miles. Forecasts predict wetter conditions in the next two weeks, though warm temperatures may keep snowfall levels low.  KIMA

  • The Washington State Patrol is honoring Trooper Noble’s 54-year legacy by showcasing his memorial garden and a proposed memorial overpass as Pasco Senator Nikki Torres plans to name the Interstate 82 span after him, while his family continues to keep his memory alive.  NonStopLocal
  • Rep. Dent introduced House Bill 2347 to block a 10% sales and use tax on non-commercial aircraft valued over $500,000 set for April 1, warning it could hurt farming by reducing access to crop-spraying aircraft (the bill would take effect immediately if passed).  1280 NewsTalk KIT
