COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Union Gap hosts Burger Week (Feb. 16-22) with restaurants featuring classic and gourmet burgers along with special deals such as half-pound options and unique stacks. Local Marketing Director Eric Patrick says residents can enjoy burger and fries specials this week.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Yakima Valley Museum hosts Japanese Day of Remembrance to mark the 84th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, using history to discuss the forced relocation of Japanese Americans (featuring a keynote by attorney Blaine Tamaki and a panel moderated by Yesenia Navarette Hunter).  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima is in the running for USA Today’s Best Beer Cities list as local voters cast ballots to highlight the hop industry that supports over 50,000 jobs (voting is open until noon on Feb. 23).  NonStopLocal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gas prices in Yakima rose by 4 cents to $3.73 per gallon on Feb. 16 compared to Feb. 9, according to GasBuddy's survey of 91 stations, and prices remain nearly 20 cents higher than a month ago while about 10 cents lower than last year.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WSU's Nursing College in Yakima is set to close due to funding problems, forcing about 35 students to choose between transferring to the Tri-Cities or Spokane. Students say the move will create financial hardship and split up the group they built over the semesters.  KIMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Port of Mattawa said the new Ecology air quality rule targets its farming community despite few industrial pollution sources and could harm the local economy. The Port urged a study to show that issues stem mainly from wildfires, dust from federal lands, and traffic (SR 243).  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city council will vote today on how to fund repairs for the Selah route tracks — a choice that could endanger the Yakima Valley Trolleys’ historic status if the route is not restored. Recent Valentine’s rides drew over 60% out-of-town riders, showing the route’s appeal for tourism.  NonStopLocal
  • Drivers should plan for overnight closures at the East Nob Hill Boulevard and Fair Avenue intersection from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday through spring, plus detours will guide traffic via Pacific Avenue and Mead Avenue as the intersection upgrade project wraps up in June.  Yakima Herald-Republic
