  • Middle school students from Naches Valley showcased communication and interview skills at Central Washington University SURC last week in a regional competition called The Amazing Shake (part of a new curriculum). ENVIRONMENT NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima Valley Trolleys officials announced they are working to raise over $7 million for repairing the 6th Avenue tracks to Selah after the City Council voted against funding on Tuesday; they plan to use creative strategies such as commercial partnerships (over a 15-month period) to secure funds.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • A bill to create an overdose mapping tool passed the state house with a vote of 81-16 (backed by SAFE Yakima Valley and Rep. Jeremie Dufault) and will be reviewed by the Senate Committee on Health and Long Term Care today.  KIMA
  • The Washington Department of Ecology announced that schools and daycares can receive up to $20,000 to replace old fluorescent fixtures that contain toxic PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study shows that stage IV breast cancer patients detected through screening have a 60% chance of surviving 10 years, compared with less than 20% for those not detected via screening (research by UK universities) and highlights the importance of regular screening.  FOX 41
