Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 21st of February.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Northwest Cider Association survey shows cider makes up 6.9% of grocery spending in Washington, compared to 1.1% nationally, with 70 cideries adding over $300 million to the state economy even as alcohol consumption declines.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Local workers at Cornerstone Ranches in Toppenish will receive $22,000 each as a settlement after being replaced by H-2A hires; some may be offered their jobs back to address concerns over worker rights. The agreement follows nearly 20 years of service by several employees.  KIMA
  • Yakima MultiCare Hospital has begun posting positions to hire replacements for 168 striking employees — a move that comes as the labor walkout enters its second month. The Teamsters Local 760 union said workers feel disrespected and will continue striking until union security, 401k and retirement benefits are met.  NonStopLocal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • All school levies in Yakima County passed on Feb. 10 as voters quickly approved the measures, while the West Valley bond for school improvements fell short of the 60% support needed. West Valley board members will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the high school library to discuss next steps.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South 18th Street in Yakima will be reduced to one lane from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, Feb. 23-27, as crews work on water lines between Viola Avenue + Nob Hill Boulevard, so drivers should plan alternate routes.  FOX 41
  • The U.S. Forest Service is seeking volunteer campground hosts at Kaner Flat and Silver Falls campgrounds this summer. Volunteers (including free camping and other benefits) must have their own RV to welcome visitors and maintain facilities in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Federal lawmakers held hearings Tuesday on bills that would set national ADAS calibration standards (addressing calibration gaps) and improve repair access for independent shops. The measures aim to boost vehicle safety and may soon affect local auto repair services.  FOX 41

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study published Friday in Science Immunology found that women experience prolonged chronic pain due to immune cells (monocytes) producing less anti-inflammatory interleukin 10 (IL10) than men. Researchers hope new treatment options, including topical testosterone, may arise from these findings.  FOX 41
  • New research found that teens who used cannabis had double the risk of developing psychotic and bipolar disorders by young adulthood. The study tracked over 463,000 adolescents through routine pediatric visits from 2016 to 2023 and highlights the need for better prevention and clear guidance.  FOX 41
