  • The Salvation Army moved into a new 33,000 sqft community center at 509 N. 4th Street last week and is now remodeling to add a worship center and gym. It will serve adults, seniors, and youth with programs, after-school care, meals, and job training.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Yakima Steak Company is launching the 2026 Million Dollar Bracket Challenge where locals can win $1,000,000 or $500 in gift cards.   • Selah is inviting local community members to create patriotic themed art for America’s 250th birthday celebration. The finished pieces will be displayed starting May 15‑17, with additional viewings on July 4 and August 7 in Selah.  KIMA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Yakima have risen by 4.0 cents per gallon since Feb. 23, reaching $3.96 on March 2 (according to GasBuddy's survey).  KIMA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State DNR warned that planned budget cuts could close 11 recreation sites statewide, affecting 19 sites and delaying openings. In Central Washington, Ahtanum Campground (30 miles west of Yakima) may not open on time due to reduced funding and staffing challenges.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tech and AI leaders sent a letter to Governor Ferguson warning that the proposed millionaire's tax may drive companies out of state and slow tech development — experts predict that lowering the tax threshold could push businesses to relocate to friendlier markets.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The WA State Dept. of Commerce approved $736 million for a broadband expansion that will deliver fiber, fixed wireless and satellite service to 166,500 homes and businesses across the state (including projects in Yakima, Benton, Franklin, Adams and Grant counties), with bidding to begin soon and installations set to finish by 2030.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Washington farmworkers employed by Cornerstone Ranches, Orchards and Farm Management may be eligible for compensation from a $1M settlement after a discrimination suit alleged local and female workers were replaced by H-2A labor.
