  • A Yakima driver recounted a near collision on Nob Hill Blvd at 24th Ave (the incident occurred a few weeks ago) when a smart car driver’s angry words turned to laughter (local drivers say the stretch often triggers road rage).   • Nikki's Cafe recently opened on elm street in Tieton next to Paper Hammer Studio and already brings locals together with quality coffee, warming food, and friendly service. Owner Nikki Townsend envisions it as the main hangout spot — a diamond in the rough.  KIMA

  • Multiple St. Patrick’s Day events will take place in Yakima Valley on Tuesday, March 17, including Rough Sets Open Mic Comedy Night at Bill’s Place and McGuire’s Annual Party in Selah (doors open at 9 a.m.) with additional celebrations featuring trivia, Irish dinners, and green beer across Yakima, Selah, and Naches.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tree Top Inc. plans to expand its fruit-processing facility in Prosser by purchasing 40 acres from the Port to build a drop yard, wastewater pretreatment plant, warehouse and manufacturing facilities that could eventually add several hundred jobs. EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 200 parents, alumni & students gathered Wednesday, March 11 at Simcoe Elementary in Wapato to urge the school board to act on bullying after 13-year-old Ethan Colfax died by suicide on March 4. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by local researcher J Shah and Dr. Clay Argano showed that the Yakima River holds many microplastics, with estimates of about 170,000 pieces passing by each second (found across nine sampling sites) and raised concerns that atmospheric sources may add to the pollution.  KIMA
