Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Bowman was appointed as the new principal for next school year at East Valley Elementary School. She served eight years as assistant principal and is a Central Washington University alumni — her years of experience will guide her in the role.  FOX 41

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representative Dan Newhouse toured the Yakima-Tieton irrigation canal on March 20th and said wildfire damage from the Rimrock Retreat Fire has created an emergency that demands repairs. He and fellow lawmakers sent a letter to the Department of the Interior urging funding to replace the century-old canal that supports local economic activity.  KIMA
  • A Yakima group turned in more than 1,400 signatures to start a recall effort against County Coroner Jim Curtice — who is on leave and is accused of lying about taking drugs from dead bodies. The group will gather more signatures through May — aiming for a goal of 18,000, with 14,000 needed to bring the recall before voters on the August ballot.  NonStopLocal
  • On Wednesday, the City of Yakima earned the Best Tasting Water title for the third year at the Central Washington contest, beating competitors such as Richland, Walla Walla, College Place & the Nob Hill Water Association. The city will compete in the Pacific Northwest American Water Works Association contest in May in Boise and later in the national conference in Denver this summer.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • New research shows that using smartwatches to calculate heart rate per step gives a better measure of heart health than counting steps, as the study analyzed data from over 6,000 adults and found that higher rates link to risks like high blood pressure, heart failure, and Type 2 diabetes. Lead researcher Zhanlin Chen will present these findings on March 29 — a step that could encourage early screening and improved wearable apps.  FOX 41
  • Doctors recommended that patients with migraines use triptans with pain relievers sold over the counter to ease pain, according to guidelines from the American College of Physicians issued March 20. Research showed that using these treatments together gave a better chance of relief for up to 48 hours — meaning patients may use less extra medicine.  FOX 41
  • A study found that over half of the claims in the top 100 TikTok videos with #ADHD were not accurate—researchers compared the video content with official ADHD guidelines. College students rated many of the flawed videos as correct and experts said health workers should ask patients about what they see online—this research warns that misleading social media posts may shape how people understand ADHD.  FOX 41

SPORTS NEWS

  • Runners in the Pacific Northwest will compete in the scenic Yakima River Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon on a USATF certified course from Ellensburg to Selah. Registration will be online only — the half marathon will limit entries to 200 participants, early starters can begin two hours before the 8:00 a.m. race, and race packets will be available on March 28 at the Selah Civic Center or designated spots.  FOX 41
