  • Rod’s House will close the eight-bed Sunnyside shelter for young adults on March 31 due to budget constraints, but outreach staff will continue linking community members to shelter options and services at its Hope Center in Yakima.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima residents are invited to honor Vietnam veterans at the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Event on Saturday, March 28 at Sarg Hubbard Park (111 S 18th Street) from 1 to 3 p.m.; the event offers free burgers, hot dogs, drinks, pastries, and other treats for veterans, their families, and friends.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Perry Technical Institute broke ground on a $21 million expansion that adds a 42,000 sqft center — housing seven classrooms, seven labs, and a rooftop solar lab for its electrical technology program.   • Pacific Northwest University in Yakima held a ceremony today to inaugurate Dr. Michael H. Mittelman as its 7th president. He said his new role will help address local healthcare gaps while Gov. Bob Ferguson praised the university’s impact (Mittelman served 33 years in the Navy).  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a New York Times investigation reported abuse allegations against Cesar Chavez, Sunnyside Mayor Vicky Frausto said the city will not renew the Chavez Day proclamation and is considering alternatives such as observing Dolores Huerta Day.   • The Yakama Nation and state attorney general's office hosted a two-day listening session at Toppenish Community Center (Tuesday and Wednesday) as the first of six planned events to gather testimonies from Indigenous boarding school survivors and descendants.
