EDUCATION NEWS

  • Perry Technical Institute held a groundbreaking ceremony for its $21 million expansion project on Washington Avenue, building a 42,000 sqft facility (for electrical training) set to open by June 2027.   • The Rockin’ For The Rangers fundraiser returns on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Bron Yr Aur Brewing Co, offering live music, a silent auction, and free activity stations for children to support the Naches School District music program.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Students from Sunnyside Christian Academy restored the century-old Chuck Wagon in Sunnyside for a community project, repairing its structure and wheels and unveiling its original logo — a project that taught teamwork and connected them to local history.  KIMA
  • White Swan High School junior Person Hoptowit spent a week in Olympia assisting legislators during a recent special session through the Page Program.   • A new study from the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center says Washington officials must improve heat wave responses after the 2021 event brought record heat, killed over 200 people, caused $9 billion in damages, and harmed local ecosystems—finding that many towns lacked adequate cooling facilities.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new law increases movie theaters’ seating capacity from 120 to 200 for screens serving alcohol in Yakima, letting venues like the Orion and Yakima Cinema plan future growth.   • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a bill on March 20 in Yakima that lets the Port of Moses Lake modify its debt limit by 0.25% so it can secure federal funding for needed rail & power upgrades. The law, sponsored by Sen. Judy Warnick, will go into effect on June 11.  NonStopLocal
