CRIME NEWS

  • In Parker, Wash.—two men were arrested after a drive-by shooting that targeted a home where a 57-year-old was approached in a car and threatened before the suspects returned to fire at residents, with one victim receiving a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at a nearby hospital and the suspects booked on felony assault and drive-by shooting charges.  FOX 41

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers in Olympia met to review executive orders that could affect Title IV student aid and raised concerns about income-driven repayment plans and federal grants (experts worry changes may freeze aid options). Yakima Valley College said its federally funded programs remain unaffected (the college added it will keep supporting its students) as community and technical schools may face uncertainty if new orders take effect.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Yakima will begin its 2025 irrigation season on April 1 for most of its 11,000 residential and business customers, with full operations anticipated by April 8 and independent systems starting early May. Randy Beehler, the communications director, warned that water shortages are expected due to a dry winter in the mountains (residents and businesses are advised to check faucets and make repairs to conserve water) while crews monitor high river and stream flows.  KIMA
  • A repair project will require a detour for southbound traffic at the Front St and Yakima Ave intersection today as crews work on a sinkhole along Staff Sgt. Pendleton Way to 1st Street from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; westbound lanes on Yakima Ave will be reduced to one lane while property access remains open.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • New moms are advised to get at least two hours a week of moderate to vigorous exercise and perform daily pelvic floor exercises to lower risks of postpartum depression, sleep problems and urinary incontinence. The guidelines released March 25 encourage activities like brisk walking or swimming—consult a doctor if there are health issues—to help mothers ease into recovery after childbirth.  FOX 41
  • Researchers tested a new material called Roliner that is made of elastic silicone—letting it inflate or deflate—to help amputees adjust the fit of their prosthetic limb liners using a smartphone. Six amputees reported fewer sores and a better fit, and researchers said the material may be used in other devices like exoskeletons in the future.  FOX 41

SPORTS NEWS

  • The road through Yakima Canyon between Thrall Road and Sundown M Ranch will close Saturday from 7 a.m.—3 p.m. for the marathon, and drivers will use Interstate 82 while residents receive passes and patrol enforces a 25 mph limit.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima Valley SunDome will host the 2025 State Dance and Drill Championship this weekend with more than 60 teams competing in six categories. Local teams from Selah, Eisenhower and Sunnyside will perform on Friday and Saturday as the event includes a drill down dance-off and a redesigned floor to better match the competition theme.  KIMA
