  • Yesterday, the Yakama Warriors Association held a ceremony at Sarg Hubbard park to honor Vietnam veterans 50 years after the war ended—local officials and speakers shared their respect and acknowledged the challenges veterans faced when returning home.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • Benton County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man on March 29 for holding a Finley woman against her will during a domestic violence dispute — she managed to escape his control.  NonStopLocal
  • Vincent Guliano Donini (26) pleaded Alford in Yakima County Superior Court and was sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting a Macy's security officer at Valley Mall during the 2023 Christmas shopping season.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local workforce programs in Yakima have benefited from a $68.65 million state Legislature investment that aligned a training program with local industry needs & helped residents move from public aid into good-paying jobs. Programs such as EcSA & CRP have boosted worker earnings, as seen by people like Omar who now work full time while increasing sales tax revenue and reducing benefits spending.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Nikki Torres announced she will run for reelection in 2026 despite the redistricting in 2024 that placed her outside the new 15th district in Yakima County—she said she will move into the district if the current boundaries remain unchanged.  KIMA
  • On April 22, Yakima County voters will decide whether to approve a 0.2% sales tax to fund a digital radio system that helps police, deputies and firefighters talk better during emergencies—voters will also learn that the upgrade could cost up to $35 million to install and add about 20 cents per $100 purchase for the next seven years. This tax measure, which is solely dedicated to the new system, aims to fix long-standing communication problems in the county.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report by Addiction-Rep showed that Washington ranked 5th in the nation for opioid-related deaths as fatalities rose 4.9% to 2,839 at 35.7 per 100,000 people over the 12 months ending in June—February 2024 was the peak month and a surge in synthetic opioids like fentanyl worsened the crisis.  NonStopLocal
  • Researchers from the University of South Australia and Stanford University created a new citrus oil formula that mixed limonene with lipids to help cancer patients with dry mouth. Lab tests done on March 29 showed the formula was 180 times more soluble and increased absorption by over 4000 percent, which may lower radiation treatment side effects.  FOX 41
