COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yakima Humane Society made history by winning consecutive March Muttness national fundraisers on March 29th — earning $28,237 and beating Cody’s Friends by nearly $10,000. The virtual event raised over $49,700 in total to support shelters and help local animals find homes.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Local agritourism operators say cherry trees will bloom from April 10—April 25 with peak blossoms on April 15 while apricot and pear trees have already started blooming. They expect more visitors to take driving tours to see the blossoms and enjoy the season.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • The Terrace Heights Community Association will hold its annual meeting on April 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Terrace Heights Civic Center at 4011 Commonwealth Road where Yakima County Commissioner Kyle Curtis and officials from the Terrace Heights Fire District and the Yakima County Sheriff's Office will speak and provide refreshments. Members may join or renew their membership as the association seeks more board members and paid members.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • A new women’s health care and aesthetic treatment clinic, New U Women’s Clinic & Aesthetics, opened last month near Yakima airport at 2407 W. Washington Ave., Suite C. Provider Rachel Fidino, who opened her Tri-Cities location in 2020, said she treats the whole patient & opened the Yakima clinic to meet rising demand for personalized care.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • Vincent Donini, a Sureño gang member, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting security officer Caleb Bryan at Valley Mall during the 2023 Christmas shopping season after Bryan confronted him over shoplifting at Macy’s.  KIMA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mortgage rates might rise slightly in April if new tariffs on imports begin on April 2nd—economists say higher tariffs could boost inflation and slowly increase home costs. Experts note that while rates have stayed near 6.5%, buyers should watch for small windows of opportunity as trade policies shift.  FOX 41

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Auditor Charles Ross is managing two recall efforts — one that requires 14,000 signatures to recall County Coroner Jim Curtice and the other involving Mabton Mayor Rachel Ruelas after a state ruling found she missed paperwork deadlines; he is now awaiting contact from petitioners. The election department will mail ballots next week with a single question on an emergency communication tax, and voters must return their ballots by April 22nd.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Health is phasing out the Care-A-Van mobile vaccination center that delivered COVID-19 and flu vaccines because CDC funding cuts forced the change. The decision means that over 100 scheduled stops will be canceled — including more than 30 visits planned for school children — through the end of June.  NonStopLocal
  • Yakima County improved its tracking of drug overdoses with the new OD Map software which links law enforcement and fire department data and showed officials that the county moved from tenth to second in overdose rates with 62 overdoses per 100,000 after going live two months ago — real-time alerts have since helped responders act when spikes occurred. The program reported six overdoses one weekend and five in the following 24 hours.  KIMA
