Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 3rd, a local shelter featured two adoptable pets in its Pet of the Week program — each is waiting for a new home.  KIMA
  • ArborFest will be held at Yakima Area Arboretum on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the free event focuses on water’s importance in supporting plants and animals—featuring 30 educational booths, free lead and arsenic testing and rose garden pruning training at 10 a.m.  NonStopLocal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Joann fabric store in Yakima closed after its second bankruptcy filing, leaving local quilters and crafters with fewer in-person fabric shopping options—customers now turn to shops like Stitch n Quilt, which celebrated 25 years on April 1 in its new Nob Hill Blvd location. Joann’s going-out-of-business sale will run until the end of May—local fabric retailers say the community values the tactile experience of shopping for materials.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima City Council approved a $1 million minimum revenue guarantee at Yakima Air Terminal—half from county economic development funds and half from federal grants—to help airlines cover losses and attract new flights, with officials targeting Delta flights to Salt Lake City. The measure, which continues support for ongoing airport initiatives, will not affect the city budget as the terminal funds remain self-sufficient.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Junior water rights holders in the Yakima River Basin will receive 58% of their water allotment this year due to heavy March rains — reservoirs remain low at 39% capacity as the area faces a third year of drought. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said deliveries for junior users will start mid-April — senior rights holders will receive full allocation.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • State lawmakers advanced a bill (6-5 committee vote) that will close the Yakima Valley School in Selah and Rainier School in Buckley by June 30, 2027 as part of a shift from state-run residential care to community-based living alternatives. The proposal now moves to the full state House and Appropriations Committee for further review.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study finds unnecessary imaging scans for Medicare patients produce up to 129 metric kilotons of carbon dioxide each year—reducing these scans could help lower emissions and fight climate change.  FOX 41
  • Health officials in Yakima are working with Indian Health Services and Yakama Tribal Health to address a rise in tuberculosis cases in the Lower Yakima Valley including areas in the Yakama Reservation. They are identifying exposures and testing close contacts — Yakima County has reported 17 cases so far to stop further spread.  Yakima Herald-Republic
