ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ State officials released documents alleging 66 safety violations — found during a Sept. 22, 2023 LNG transfer in Toppenish — that led to the death of 62-year-old Earnest D. Barnett and injured a truck driver, prompting a recommendation of nearly $5.7M in fines and a virtual prehearing on April 25. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Early Friday morning, a car accident on 16th Avenue near Nob Hill caused a vehicle to lose control—hitting a bus stop, fences, and a fire hydrant—and authorities are investigating the crash with no injuries reported. KIMA

- ➤ Employers will join two reverse job fairs organized by the Yakima County Development Association—partnering with Toppenish High School, YV-Tech and Swan Graphics—to meet job seekers who showcase their skills. - ➤ Today, Yakomix opened at 1404 Fruitvale Blvd to offer back-issue comics from the 1970s through the 2010s in a store billed as Yakima’s Premiere Discount Comic Book Emporium. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Cowiche Canyon Conservancy acquired 80 additional acres in the Cowiche Canyon Uplands to protect the shrub-steppe habitat—adding land that supports local wildlife and keeps a popular trail open for public use. - ➤ Julia Davis was sworn in as Yakima County District Court judge on April 1, replacing Judge Donald Engle who resigned in March. A former deputy county prosecuting attorney (and the third woman on the bench), she earned praise for her fair and proactive leadership. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Zillah secured a $3.125M grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation to rebuild the Zillah Heights Road Bridge, which now only allows foot traffic because of safety concerns. - ➤ Researchers at Washington University and the University of Washington developed an experimental blood test that diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease and tracked its progression by measuring levels of MTBR-tau243 with 92% accuracy. The study distinguished early from later stages and separated Alzheimer’s patients from those with other brain conditions, and the test may soon help doctors choose targeted treatments. FOX 41
