ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Yakima police said a 19-year-old rider died when his motorcycle crashed into a tree on the 1600 block of South 64th Avenue at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, April 5 after leaving the roadway near Terry Avenue while riding northbound.  Apple Valley News Now
  • A 50-year-old Yakima man, Alejandro Rodriguez, died from blunt force trauma when his sedan collided with a pickup truck in Buena around 5:20 p.m. Friday—two truck passengers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as investigators said he was speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old Yakima man pleaded guilty on March 28 to assault charges after he pointed a gun at officers during an April 16, 2022 incident when officers shot him, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Investigators are asking for help to identify a woman whose skeletal remains were found on Feb 16, 1988 in the Lower Yakima Valley—using DNA and genetic genealogy tests they hope to match her with a family member as part of a homicide investigation.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • The Yakima County Coroner’s Office—working with NAMUS and the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab—is asking the public to help solve a 1988 cold case after unidentified remains known as Parker Doe were discovered near Parker Dam and buried in 1989, and DNA tests have ruled out a link to missing person Karen Louise Johnley Wallahee while further genetic genealogy seeks a family member for comparison.  NonStopLocal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Yakima, average gasoline prices rose by 21.8 cents per gallon to $4.08 as of April 7th, according to GasBuddy's survey of 91 stations. The survey shows prices were 36.5 cents higher than a month ago and 31.8 cents lower than a year ago + the cheapest station charged $3.43 while the most expensive was $4.59 on April 6th.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scientists at UNICAMP found that weight training for six months, done twice a week, improved memory and protected key brain regions in older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The study suggests that adding strength training to a regular routine may help lower dementia risk by shielding brain areas linked to Alzheimer’s.  FOX 41
  • A new study shows that heart-related deaths are 86% more likely during heatwaves that last both day and night—known as compound heatwaves—compared to those affecting only one part of the day. Researchers plan to use these findings to predict future risks and urge people with heart conditions to take extra precautions during intense heat events.  FOX 41

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Yakima’s historic Seasons Performance Hall at 101 N. Naches Ave. got a new owner when the Seasons Group LLC bought the building and renamed it the Crown Ballroom. The owners are making updates—installing a fence, repainting and replacing tiles—to prepare the venue for weddings, concerts and other events starting June 1.  Yakima Herald-Republic
