- ➤ The United Farm Workers union continues its boycott against Windmill Farms mushrooms to protest alleged exploitation & seek a union contract, urging the public not to buy the products while the protest remains in effect. KIMA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Kittitas man (Dwayne David Stafford, 56) was charged with attempted first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault and felony harassment after he hit his girlfriend with a rifle, dragged her from her car and choked her in the West Valley Walmart parking lot on March 30; he is being held on ($100,000 bail) while arraignment is scheduled for Monday. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Yakima School District is updating cafeteria meals to serve less sugar, sodium and additives and more whole grains, fresh fruit and scratch-cooked food. The district will roll out the changes gradually over the next two years — with chocolate milk offered only one day a week and new local food partnerships supporting the updates. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Washington State Department of Ecology announced that it has extended a drought emergency for Central Washington for a third year and issued a drought advisory for north-central areas. The agency said Yakima-area reservoirs are at 59% of normal (the fifth-lowest level on record) and irrigators may receive only 58% of normal water during the April to September period while up to $4.5 million in drought response grants will be available. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A study published on April 8th found that severe strep infections more than doubled from 2013 to 2022, rising from about 4 to 8 cases per 100,000 people (from 1,082 to 2,759 cases in the data). Health experts say a vaccine is needed to fight the infection that can lead to dangerous complications like toxic shock syndrome (a quick and severe reaction). FOX 41
- ➤ A new study found that eating only during the daytime lowered heart risks for night shift workers. In a two-week lab trial with 20 young participants, those who ate only during the day maintained stable cardiovascular risk factors—while those who ate at night saw increased risks. FOX 41
