GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima County’s public defense system is short on lawyers and leaves people who cannot afford one waiting many months for help—23-year-old Robert Dale Root waited three months and now has his trial set on April 21. County officials face lawsuits and long delays as low funds and hiring troubles keep the crisis going.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima County commissioners accepted Coroner Jim Curtice's resignation on April 15 after months of negotiations with his legal representative and the prosecuting attorney; his resignation will take effect after a seven day period during which he may withdraw his decision. Curtice still faces charges of official misconduct, tampering with physical evidence and making a false or misleading statement to a public official in Yakima County District Court.  FOX 41
  • Yakima City Council meets tonight to review key community upgrades for the Capitol Theatre, Yakima Airport and the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce lease extension. Charlie Robin, CEO of the Capitol Theatre, will present renovation plans that include a new terrace, seating and an exterior facelift while the council examines a $2.2 million proposal to improve the airport terminal and add solar-covered parking.  KIMA
  • Yakima County has yet to make the road improvements it promised after the fatal 2015 head-on collision that killed Granger High student Angel Mendoza; county officials have a preliminary design for a T-shaped intersection (project cost estimated at between $1 million and $1.5 million) but still lack the funding needed in the current transportation plan.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Research from the University of Toronto found that chemicals from children’s mattresses in bedrooms exposed babies to harmful substances—phthalates, flame retardants and UV filters—and the study measured both bedroom air and new mattresses—prompting experts to call for stronger safety standards.  FOX 41
  • Hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder who got addiction consultation were more likely to start medicine and join follow-up care than those given usual treatment—57% started medication versus 27% and 72% accessed further care versus 48%. Researchers said getting help in the hospital offers a key chance to fight addiction.  FOX 41
  • A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on April 14 found that poor communication among hospital staff caused 25% of patient safety incidents and was solely responsible for risk in 10% of cases—examples include medication and surgical errors—and emphasized the need for improved communication to protect patients.  FOX 41
