CRIME NEWS

  • Officers in Selah conducted a welfare check on a child when a parent said the child lived elsewhere—investigation led to a possible burial site near Cowiche Mill Road—and the Washington State Crime Scene Response Team is assisting as the investigation continues.  NonStopLocal
  • Police discovered human remains on Cowiche Mill Road during a child welfare investigation that began earlier this week—officers responded on April 16 and uncovered signs of a burial—and they will schedule an autopsy next week while several agencies work on the case and confirm there is no danger to the public.  Apple Valley News Now
  • A 44-year-old Yakima man, Santos Tellez Mojica, was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop on Interstate 90 in Grant County after officers observed drug evidence in his vehicle—which led to a search warrant at his Yakima residence that produced cocaine, several firearms, and ammunition—and he was booked on suspicion of drug trafficking.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 400 children in Lower Yakima Valley will return to Head Start when classes reopen Monday after a brief shutdown. Inspire Development Centers was notified Friday it received federal funding ($4.15 million) and had laid off (72) employees before closing several classrooms.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters in Yakima County are assessing Proposition 1 which would add a 0.2% sales tax to raise $35 million for an upgraded emergency radio system that aims to improve first responder communications. If passed, the tax will begin in January 2026 and end in December 2032—ballots for the special election will be due by April 22 at 8:00 p.m.  NonStopLocal
  • Yakima County coroner Jim Curtice resigned after a mutual settlement and separation agreement with the county that will pay him half his annual salary and all health benefits until the end of the year (the agreement clears the county and officials from legal claims and allows him to keep his cadaver dog Justice); both parties denied liability.  NonStopLocal
  • The Yakima City Council approved a $2.2 million contract with Cliff Thorn Construction (of Richland) for upgrades to the Yakima Air Terminal, including work on the roof, HVAC system, utilities, and a solar canopy as the first step of improvements. The council also approved agreements for reserved pickleball court space at Franklin Park and a discounted use fee for the Yakima Youth Golf Organization at Fisher Park Golf Course through Oct. 30.  Yakima Herald-Republic
