COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 26, Yakima County Crime Stoppers, Safe Yakima Valley and the Sheriff’s Office will host Shreds and Meds events in Yakima and Grandview that let people dispose of old documents and expired drugs safely. The Yakima event at the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce at 10 N. Ninth St. runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a limit of three shopping bags or two banker boxes for documents, and the Grandview event at the Old Bank of America Building at 115 Ash St. runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—a drug take-back event will also be held in Tieton at the Highland Food Bank at 414 Maple St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Authorities arrested 21-year-old Yakima resident Israel Barriga-Vargas at a West Valley home on Monday afternoon after an early Sunday shooting at a Terrace Heights party led to the death of 18-year-old Salvador Granillo Jr.—he is now facing a $500,000 warrant for second-degree murder.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima County Sheriff's Office said Vargas surrendered and was arrested today at a Yakima home on suspicion of murder after deputies responded to a Sunday morning shooting that left an 18-year-old dead—law enforcement from several agencies say he was located on South 90th Avenue following a report from a nearby hospital.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Police are searching for Yakima resident Isreal Barriga Vargas, a 21-year-old alleged to be armed and dangerous, who fled in a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer (license plate CRH8859) after fatally shooting an 18-year-old during a fight early Sunday in the 1500 block of Keys Road with hospital officials confirming the victim died later.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Salvador 'Junior' Granillo, an 18-year-old, died after being shot during an altercation at a Yakima party on the 1500 block of South Keys Road early Sunday morning, and police arrested 21-year-old Israel Barriga Vargas — who fled in a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer — charging him with second-degree murder.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 17th, community members, students and Yakima Valley College faculty and staff gathered at the intersection of West Nob Hill Boulevard and South 16th Avenue to protest potential cuts to federal education funding. The rally was organized by YVC faculty union president Rachel Dorn to urge lawmakers to preserve funding — protecting scholarships and financial aid — that keeps college accessible for local students.  Apple Valley News Now
