COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, the Yakima Valley will host many community events, including wine tasting at over 30 wineries from April 25 to 27 and a dog show at Sozo Athletic Complex from Friday to Sunday. Local groups will also run the 62nd annual Parade of Gems at State Fair Park, an Earth Day event and Kids Fish In at Sarg Hubbard Park, multiple Día del Niño celebrations, and the Old Steel Car Show on Sunday — offering fun for all ages.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Grizzly Espresso reopened its drive-thru at 2402 Fruitvale Blvd. after a few months at a temporary spot and will host a joint open house with Energy Wellness Center on Sunday, April 27—featuring prize giveaways and food and drink specials—for loyal customers.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • Yakima County Sheriff's deputies arrested 21-year-old Isreal Barriga Vargas on a second degree murder charge after he fatally shot 18-year-old high school student Salvador Granillo during a fight at a Yakima party on Sunday morning on the 1500 block of South Keys Road—Granillo was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Yakima County Development Association has partnered with Toppenish High School, Swan Graphics, YV-Tech, and South Central Workforce to host reverse job fairs that let local vocational students present their skills to potential employers. One event is planned for April 30 at Toppenish High School and another for May 15 at YV-Tech—these events will help connect businesses with homegrown talent.  Yakima Herald-Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community members who want to run for Yakima school board are invited to an informational session led by Superintendent Trevor Greene that will explain board roles, the application process and responsibilities; the session will be held Tuesday, April 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the professional library in the Central Services Building at 104 N. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 100 volunteers gathered Tuesday afternoon at Ahtanum Ridge for Yakama Nation's 4th annual Earth Day cleanup. The joint effort by Yakama Nation and Yakima Chief Hops removed illegally dumped trash including broken glass — cardboard — tires — shotgun shells to help protect local water systems and land for future generations.  FOX 41

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima County voters passed Proposition 1 Tuesday night, approving a 0.2% sales tax—an extra dime on a $50 purchase—that will fund a digital radio upgrade for first responders. The measure will generate $35 million for the upgrade and cover $3.3 million in operating costs over seven years.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yakima County launched a 911 Nurse Navigation Program that directs 911 calls needing nonemergency help to licensed nurses — the service, managed out of Texas, guides patients to alternative care options to avoid unnecessary ambulance rides and emergency room waits. AMR, the primary 911 ambulance provider in the area, said the program will save costs and ease the strain on local emergency services.  KIMA
