COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 1, local families, workers, and groups will gather in Sunnyside for a May Day March and Resource Fair to honor workers and share local resources — the event is hosted by We Are ELLA and the United Farm Workers. The day will include a boycott action at Windmill Farms at 2:00 p.m., a march from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. starting in front of Walmart on E Lincoln Ave and ending at Sunnyview Park, and a resource fair from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. — speakers, music, and food from local vendors are planned.  KIMA
  • Zillah is honoring its small town roots as longtime family businesses like the Squeeze Inn continue to serve the community while new projects on Vintage Valley Parkway aim to revitalize downtown. City Administrator Michael Grayum has proposed a public market that will bring local vendors together and boost tourism—efforts that preserve the town’s heritage and support future growth.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • At Sozo Sports Complex, hundreds of dogs competed in the Yakima Valley Kennel Club’s annual dog show held Friday through Sunday, with judge Richard Lewis overseeing events like obedience, rally, and puppy competitions.   • Parker Casey from Selah High School has been named a finalist for the FCCLA Member of the Year Award for 2024–2025—sponsored by the U.S. Army. He was a national semi-finalist and serves as Washington FCCLA State President, helping drive student advocacy statewide.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington lawmakers approved a transportation spending plan that raises gasoline, diesel, and vehicle sales taxes—set to add $3.2 billion over six years for major highway projects, new hybrid ferries, and stream culvert improvements. The plan delays some projects like the Highway 18 expansion until the early 2030s while it awaits full House and Senate votes on Sunday.  Yakima Herald-Republic
