  • Justice Housing Yakima is hosting a free screening of the film Beyond the Bridge at Davis High School on May 7 with a pre-screening reception (with food) at 5 p.m. and a panel discussion on local homelessness solutions, ending at 8:30 p.m.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima Salvation Army will host a free Mother’s Day tea event on Wednesday, May 6th at 5:15 p.m. at the Salvation Army Yakima Community Center (509 N 4th Street), where families can enjoy tea and activities to celebrate mothers.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Earlier in April, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office rescued a steer that drifted nearly four miles in a canal near St. Hilaire and Postma Road by roping it and pulling it out with help from neighbors.  NonStopLocal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Special election results for Yakima School District's $200 million bond show 60.09% approval (with 500 to 800 votes still pending) as Tuesday’s vote heads to certification on May 8. The measure will fund facility upgrades at 24 schools, including replacing Hoover and Garfield elementary.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study by Trace One shows Washington had over 1,700 hazmat transit incidents from April 2021 to April 2026, causing about 1.5 million dollars in damage and 15 cases that led to injury or death. Idaho recorded fewer than 300 incidents over the same period.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Zillah is advancing a downtown revitalization project that celebrates its agricultural heritage with fruit-themed improvements and infrastructure upgrades. Completed work includes upgraded streets while remaining phases will add sidewalks and replace an aging water line with a 12-inch main to support local businesses and pedestrian safety.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Yakima Neighborhood Health Services named Dr. Daniel Dunbar chief medical officer after nearly four years as an internal medicine doctor. He (a Zillah native who earned his degree at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences) will lead clinical services following Dr. Jocelyn Pedrosa's retirement in March.  Yakima Herald-Republic
