COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce recognized four women with Legendary awards. Betty Jo Murray received the Community Service Award, city manager Vicki Baker won the Leadership in Business Award, Chris Scacco earned the Education Award, and Roxanne Brady got the Business Ownership Award—each honored to inspire others in achieving their potential.  KIMA
  • The Zillah Community Days event kicked off on Friday with a vendor market & carnival setup that brought local friends & neighbors together. Today at Stewart Park, the celebration continues at 10:00 a.m. with a dunk tank featuring Mayor Carmack, a live band, a beer & wine garden, & games honoring local heroes.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • Grandview police discovered a stolen vehicle in a Safeway parking lot this week and arrested two suspects after detaining three occupants — the driver, a 46-year-old from Wapato charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, theft tools and driving with a suspended license, and a convicted felon charged with unlawful firearm possession when a shotgun and many shaved keys were found inside.  NonStopLocal
  • Beth Ann Striver pleaded guilty in Yakima County Superior Court on May 7 to two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault after her drunken driving killed Issaquah men Randy Agnew and Rodney Ahrens and injured two other riders—she received a concurrent 12-year sentence while her actions continue to affect many families.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the last Yakima City Council meeting, City Manager Vicki Baker shared survey findings showing that 40 percent of voters believed police funding is a top priority. The survey found that voters favored cutting funds for lobbying, council travel, fireworks funding and windows alive funding but were hesitant to close the Franklin pool or trim certain police units — details that may shape future budget decisions.  KIMA
  • Bipartisan lawmakers including Rep. Dan Newhouse from Sunnyside reintroduced the Farm Workforce Modernization Act this week to give farmworkers a path to legal status and update the H-2A system—details include funding for farmworker housing and a pilot program for portable visas. Lawmakers from Washington, California, and Idaho support the proposal while critics worry it may not fully address rising labor costs.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • The Yakima Police Department will host a Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Sarg Hubbard Park at the Yakima Greenway Visitor Center—honoring fallen officers and celebrating recent promotions.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Grandview Police Department has restarted its Neighborhood Focus Program to address complaints by dividing the city into six zones, starting with parking issues on the north side. Chief Kal Fuller said officers will post parking notices that give drivers 24 hours to correct problems—helping to reduce repeated violations.  NonStopLocal
