  • A free community event focused on opioid risk education will be held at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences on May 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Yakima where parents and youth will receive professional Narcan training, free first aid kits, dinner, and childcare along with age-appropriate sessions in English and Spanish.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Anjelica Reyna Mora opened a new flower shop on the second floor of the Little Bake Shop on Tieton Drive and 68th Avenue in West Valley. CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday at 7:20 p.m., Yakima police went to Chesterly Skate Park on 40th Avenue after multiple 911 calls and found a 36-year-old man shot dead in a gang-related incident and later arrested a suspect on a second-degree murder charge—witnesses helped investigators.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • A Yakima Police Department news release said that a 22-year-old man was arrested after fatally shooting a 36-year-old man near Chesterley Skatepark Monday evening around 7:20 p.m.-investigators believe the gang-motivated shooting warrants further review and urge witnesses to call police with any information.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Larry Riegel has been missing since Christmas 2009—his case is now in focus as Yakima Police released a cold case video on May 7 and his family launched a podcast on Monday with a second episode set for May 19 while offering a $50,000 reward for new tips.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A recall petition against Mabton Mayor Rachel Ruelas will not proceed because it was submitted too close to the election, according to a letter from Yakima County Elections Division Manager Kathy Fisher—state law bars recalls within six months of the general election. Voters will have their say in the Aug. 5 primary as Ruelas faces Martha Gonzalez and Laura Vazquez.  Yakima Herald-Republic
