ECONOMY NEWS

  • Washington lost an estimated 4,500 jobs in April and its unemployment rate rose to 5.2%—Yakima County hit 6.9% while the public sector saw 3,000 jobs drop.  NonStopLocal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters from the Selah Fire Department are battling a wildfire on Sage Trail Road just south of Pomona Heights this evening. The blaze has burned 20 acres + roughly six times the size of Wixson Park, and crews are working to contain it.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Roza Irrigation District crews will begin shutting off water delivery today for about 10 days to conserve water later in the season amid drought conditions (the shutdown is part of prorationing efforts that provide non-senior water rights holders 52% of their allotment).  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Firefighters battled several vegetation fires in Yakima, Benton and Franklin counties on Wednesday as crews worked to contain brush and grass fires amid dry conditions.  Apple Valley News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Horizon Pharmacy in Wapato is offering free medication locking bags with opioid prescriptions until the end of June to help prevent misuse — the effort is part of the Pharmacy Safe Storage Program and the Starts with One campaign with Yakima Health District and local groups also distributing bags.  Yakima Herald-Republic
