- ➤ Today, the Yakima Valley Youth Chorus will perform at 6:30 p.m. at Zillah Nazarene Church with the Zillah Community Choir presenting a historic gospel piece while a student pottery sale runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Palmer Martin Hall. Also today, Grandview begins its summer concert series at Norm Childress Amphitheater with Desert Moondogs playing at 7:30 p.m., while Packwood hosts its Memorial Day flea market from May 23-26 & a free youth improv class is scheduled for Sunday from 2-3 p.m. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ Sunnyside High School announced that junior Anthony Gutierez died over the weekend in a car crash in Sunnyside—counselors are available today as the Washington State Patrol investigates the incident. NonStopLocal

- ➤ Jesus Rodriguez, a 22-year-old gang member, was charged with second-degree murder in Yakima after fatally shooting 36-year-old Raul Macias at Chesterly Skate Park on May 12 — he is in Yakima County Jail on $200,000 bail. 1280 NewsTalk KIT

- ➤ The Yakima Herald-Republic newsroom will welcome a new Report for America corps member, Alexander Banks, in early July to cover education gaps in the Valley—he is an Oregon State University graduate with journalism experience from Salem. - ➤ West Valley High School hosted its annual Farm Days event at the West Valley Fire Station to give elementary students a hands-on look at farming and agriculture careers—featuring hayrides, a petting zoo, games, planting activities and interactive learning stations led by agriscience students and the FFA Club. - ➤ A study at the University of Cincinnati found that many seniors feared cataract surgery even though it is a quick and safe procedure with a 95% success rate; clear explanations did not ease their fears — doctors stress that building trust between patients and their doctors is needed. - ➤ The city of Zillah is building the Zillah Sports Hub on a 24-acre site to include synthetic turf fields for soccer, football, baseball and softball. City leaders will seek council approval on Monday and the school board will give final approval today — the project aims to support local teams and attract regional events — paving the way for enhanced community sports. - ➤ Heritage University professor and chess master Loren Schmidt will travel to Lincoln, Neb. on May 31 to play at the anniversary celebration of the 1975 U.S. Chess Open he competed in 50 years ago (he now ranks seventh among top players over 65 according to the US Chess Federation).
