  • Yakima Kiwanis Free Bikes 4 Kidz has given away over 200 refurbished bicycles and new safety helmets to local children in partnership with ESD 105 Early Learning Program to help them start summer on two wheels—this annual effort, now in its eighth year, has distributed over 1,000 bikes to get kids outdoors and active.  KIMA
  • Three immigration attorneys provided free immigration consultations at Yakima Valley College on May 24, with nearly 30 people attending—others have been placed on the waitlist for a clinic planned for July 19 in Walla Walla.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yesterday, Yakima’s National Alliance on Mental Illness held its sixth annual NAMI-Walks event at Franklin Park where more than 130 participants wore green in support of mental health awareness – community leaders offered resources and support groups to help end stigma.  FOX 41

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima Air Terminal director Rob Hodgman was selected on May 23rd to join Washington state's Commercial Aviation Work Group— a panel set to advise on long-range aviation and transportation needs. He will serve as one of 11 non-voting members as the group studies options to expand regional aviation capacity.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 31 the FDA approved Moderna’s new lower-dose COVID-19 vaccine, mNexspike, for adults 65 and older and for people ages 12 to 64 with a high-risk health condition — a second option that is not meant to replace the current shot — after a study with 11,400 people showed it is safe and works well. Moderna said it will offer both shots this fall.  FOX 41
  • Yakima's NAMI held its sixth annual NAMI-Walks event at Franklin Park where more than 130 people gathered in green to show support for mental health awareness. Community leaders shared resources to help end stigma and some participants released butterflies to honor loved ones lost to suicide.  NonStopLocal
