CRIME NEWS

  • Selah Police continue to investigate the death of 4-year-old Alaric 'AJ' Funderburgh found on Cowiche Mill Road on April 18 — autopsy results remain pending and his father, Preston Funderburgh, may face upgraded federal charges after state charges were dropped.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Yakima Police reported that a 64-year-old local, Collin Smith, was severely injured in a hit-and-run crash on Nob Hill overpass Friday—he broke both arms and legs and sustained a serious head injury while the suspect, believed to be under the influence, fled the scene before being later pursued downtown and arrested on DUI, Felony Hit and Run, and Vehicular Assault charges.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • A Kennewick man and a South Carolina man were sentenced on June 2 for defrauding COVID relief programs by submitting fake funding applications that netted over $292,000 and attempted to secure an extra $560,000; David Kurt Schneider received one year in prison while Kelly Jo Driver got five years probation — co-defendant Leif Gerald Larsen pled guilty to wire fraud and will be sentenced on July 30 in Yakima.  FOX 41

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Yakima went up 1.3 cents per gallon in the week since Memorial Day and now stand at $4.04/g, according to GasBuddy's survey of 91 stations. Prices are 20.4 cents above last month and 4.2 cents below last year — the cheapest station charged $3.40/g while the costliest was $4.59/g.  KIMA

  • Today Yakima residents are asked if the city should join the list of DHS Sanctuary cities before the list is removed. Poll results will air at 5 and 6 p.m. — check local newscasts for the outcome — so voters can share their views.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study found that a low-fat vegan diet reduced severe hot flashes by 92% and led to an 8-pound weight loss among menopausal women. Researchers led by Dr. Hana Kahleova reported that the diet worked even with processed plant foods—pointing to a potential benefit for women managing menopause.  FOX 41
  • Researchers reported on June 2 that a new treatment using T-DXd with pertuzumab nearly halved the risk of disease progression or death from HER2‑positive metastatic breast cancer in a trial of about 400 patients—an interim analysis showed a 44 percent risk reduction and longer progression‑free survival compared to standard care.  FOX 41
  • A study published May 30 found that banning water fluoridation could add over 25 million decayed teeth in children and teens in five years—raising dental care costs from $9.8 billion to nearly $19.4 billion over a decade. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 8,500 kids and warned that most costs would impact public health programs.  FOX 41
