- ➤ Dozens of cyclists arrived in Yakima yesterday evening as part of the annual Journey of Hope to raise awareness for people with disabilities — they rode a challenging 125-mile leg with 5,000 feet of climbing. The Trans-America Team, including 31 fraternity members, began in Seattle on Wednesday and will stop in Richland tomorrow before reaching Washington, D.C., on August 9. FOX 41
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Yakima police are searching for a suspect after a shooting on South 2nd Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday that left one victim in critical condition after being taken to Multicare Yakima Memorial Hospital—officials said the suspect has been identified and they are asking anyone with information to call 911. 1280 NewsTalk KIT
- ➤ A Yakima man, Leonel Escamilla Jr., 38, is in custody after police said he fled the scene of a crash today on West Nob Hill Boulevard that left a pedestrian critically injured and faces charges including vehicular assault and felony hit and run — at a Monday hearing a judge will maintain a $200,000 bail because of public safety concerns and his prior convictions. - ➤ A Yakima man was sentenced to 22.5 years in federal prison for enticing teenage girls to send him explicit images—he pleaded guilty to charges of enticing a minor and possessing child sexual abuse material after contacting at least eight girls via social media between October 2020 and August 2022. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Congressman Dan Newhouse wrote to the EPA chief—asking for an investigation into alleged collusion between staffers and environmental activists—that led to the shutdown of a dairy in the Granger area on June 5. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Yakima Air Terminal Director Rob Hodgman was named a nonvoting member of the state’s Commercial Aviation Work Group— a panel set up to study long-range aviation and might recommend expanding airports or building new ones. He received his appointment on May 23 and expects his work will benefit Yakima. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Lawmakers from the 14th Legislative District will hold a virtual town hall on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom to discuss a legislative session focused on a multi-billion dollar state budget shortfall—residents must register online to join and listen to Sen. Curtis King, Rep. Deb Manjarrez, and Rep. Gloria Mendoza, whose districts cover areas from East Yakima to Lower Valley and Yakama Nation. Yakima Herald-Republic
