COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Richland Farmers Market season opener took place on June 6 at Richland Parkway as local shoppers found fresh produce and artisan goods while Adventures Underground is hosting its Mushroom Fest with food and entertainment today through June 8—in Yakima today the Yakima Pippins will face the Cowlitz Black Bears at County Stadium at 6:35 p.m. with $7 discounted general admission tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis.  NonStopLocal
  • Thirty-one Pi Kappa Phi fraternity riders stopped in Yakima today after a 125-mile ride over Mount Rainier as part of the Journey of Hope—a 4,000-mile cycling event to raise funds and awareness for people with disabilities. The TransAmerica team rides about 75 miles daily and will move on to Richland on its way to Washington, D.C.  KIMA
  • The Yakima Mile returns today with an evening of races, music, and community activities while streets from 3rd to 1st and areas near 11th are closed starting at 2 p.m. to manage traffic for the 7 p.m. race, which also supports programs at YWCA Yakima for domestic violence victims—marking its sixth year.  FOX 41

CRIME NEWS

  • Peter McVerbrugge, 57, a former fruit industry leader, is scheduled to change his plea Tuesday in Yakima County Superior Court for vehicular assault after he hit cyclist Anna Danker on April 9 while allegedly driving under the influence+earlier hearings were delayed to work out plea details.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, Toppenish began treaty days to honor nearly 170 years since a treaty granted the Yakama Nation sovereignty — the celebration opened with a parade featuring the Yakama Warriors and will continue this weekend with golf, a pow wow, a stick game and a rodeo.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at West Valley Innovation Center unboxed a CubCrafters airplane kit today to launch a new aerospace program funded by a Career Prep and Launch grant. High school students will assemble the plane frame during the 2025-26 school year and the program will later include younger students learning CAD, robotics and other skills—helping them build practical career pathways in aerospace.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 5th, 2025, Catholic bishops asked a federal court to block a new Washington law that could jail priests for up to 364 days, fine them $5,000, and impose civil liability if they keep confession secrets. The lawsuit argues that clergy already must report abuse outside confession — a hearing is expected this summer.  KIMA
