  • Habitat for Humanity of Yakima hosted a Hoedown for Housing fundraiser at Selah’s Forenpohar Ranch on June 7th, where attendees enjoyed silent and live auctions, music, and food from Yakima Steak Company that raised funds for local housing projects. A guest speaker shared a family’s story of receiving help to build a home—showing how the event supported affordable housing efforts in the community.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Franklin Pool in Franklin Park along Tieton Drive in Yakima will open Thursday and remain open until Aug. 24 — charging $3 for kids 17 and under, $4 for adults, and offering discount passes, three-month passes, and 10-punch cards—while hosting scheduled recreational swimming, lap swimming, water walking, lessons, and Aqua Zumba.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • This Father's Day weekend, Yakima Valley will offer several events including Cruisin' the Ave for Pets on Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m.—an event benefiting local pet rescues—and Union Gap Old Town Days with Civil War battles and historical displays at a local museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can also join a community yard sale at State Fair Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a pancake breakfast by the police from 6 to 10 a.m., and a 3.2K fun run starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Joan Papantoniou, a missing Toppenish resident, was found safe at 1:08 p.m. on June 10 after being last seen on June 1 when a roommate’s sister gave her a ride from the nursing home to Terrace Heights—police said the Washington State Patrol had activated a silver alert.  NonStopLocal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Luanna Huang, a former student government leader at Ike, is headed to Princeton University this fall where she will study economics and plan to earn advanced degrees. She led many groups & interned with the Yakima Schools Foundation, building an impressive record of leadership.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Wapato School District announced that a groundbreaking ceremony for the new PACE High School will take place Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at 310 S. Wasco Ave — construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2026-27 school year as a new consolidated elementary school will replace Camas and Satus Elementary.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study found that emergency surgeries cost 33% more than planned ones and that patients of color face higher charges—Black patients paid about $15,500 while white patients paid around $13,100 on average. The research showed that converting 10% of these emergency cases to scheduled procedures could save $1.8 billion a year and stressed that better access to regular care can help lower these costs.  FOX 41
  • Primal fitness is a growing trend where local residents retrain their bodies with natural movements like crawling and squatting that mirror how our ancestors moved – searches for workouts like quadrobics increased 174% as more people seek outdoor, equipment-free routines.
