CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two Pasco Sureño gang members were arrested after a Saturday drive-by shooting in Sunnyside that fired a bullet into an occupied house — police tracked the suspects through a 2019 Dodge Journey and set bail at $75,000 and $100,000 during a preliminary hearing. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ Yakima Valley College hosted its first Pride Pop Up event on June 7th with drag shows, book readings, and other activities organized by its pride club and college administration. Dozens of community members found a safe space to be themselves plus Yakima Pride plans to host its Pride Festival on June 21. Yakima Herald-Republic
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heritage University raised a record $1,297,744 at its 39th annual scholarship dinner held on June 7 in Toppenish and at a Seattle restaurant — 300 guests joined — with university leaders and a student speaker sharing how scholarships help students. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Angelica Cardenas from Pioneer Elementary in Sunnyside was named regional Classified Employee of the Year on June 12 in a surprise school assembly by Educational Service District 105—she has worked at the school for eight years and said the honor gives special ed students a strong voice. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction for a roundabout at 72nd and Washington will begin Monday, June 16 as commercial trucks are rerouted via a detour on 64th Avenue starting at 6 a.m.—the project, valued at $1.47 million and built in four phases by Corbin Construction, will finish in November while access to nearby properties remains available. Yakima Herald-Republic
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Enflonsia is a new FDA-approved antibody shot that cut RSV-related hospital stays in infants by more than 84% in trials and may be available before the next RSV season. The shot, given as a single 105-milligram injection, is awaiting a CDC review that was delayed due to recent changes on its advisory committee—this new option aims to better protect babies from RSV. - ➤ A study of over 356,000 participants found that short telomeres—a marker of accelerated aging—were linked to an 11% higher risk of dementia, stroke, or late-life dementia. Researchers said that healthy lifestyle choices such as good diet and regular exercise can cancel this risk increase. FOX 41
