COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new Aquatic Center at MLK Jr. Park will have its ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:00 pm, Thursday, June 19th, where local and government leaders will speak about the project’s support. The center will open to the public at 3:30 pm—replacing older pools that were closed after long use.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • Yakima Police arrested a suspect on Saturday morning after officers responded at 9:15 a.m. to a shooting on the 1200 block of Pleasant Avenue where they found a 66-year-old man dead from gunshot wounds — the suspect was booked on a felony murder charge with no ongoing threat reported.  NonStopLocal
  • Kevin William Wissman, a 61-year-old Yakima resident, was sentenced to six months in federal prison for stealing items from the Kalispel Tribe cultural display at Northern Quest Resort and Casino in 2020—stolen baby moccasins remain missing and a $25,000 reward is offered for leads.  KIMA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Renowned photographer Irwin Nash, who documented the lives of farmworkers in Yakima Valley since 1967, died on June 2 at age 89 in a Seattle assisted living facility — his work captured the struggles and hope of migrant laborers. Friends and activists plan a memorial service at the Yakima Valley Museum to honor his lasting impact.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Yakima must prepare for overnight lane closures at the intersection of Nob Hill Boulevard and Fair Avenue next week as AT&T relocates its underground duct for a stormwater drain project, with closures running from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on June 16 and June 17—property access will remain open.  FOX 41

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Health said whooping cough cases surged this year with more than 2,000 confirmed and probable cases and over 1,300 reported by May 31. Health officials noted one whooping cough-related death in 2024 — the first since 2011 — and urged residents to update their vaccinations.  NonStopLocal
  • Researchers at Florida Atlantic University found that one or two focused sets per workout may build muscle and strength — the study reviewed training volumes and noted that benefits peak at about 11 fractional sets for muscle growth and two direct sets for strength. The findings, based on earlier studies and not yet peer-reviewed, may help people design more efficient workouts.  FOX 41

  • Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller, both U.S. Open champions at Oakmont, advised potential contenders to stay patient amid heavy tournament pressure as they recalled past challenges on difficult greens.
