- ➤ Yakima Valley non-profit organizations are invited to apply for grants from the Ruth Luhman Fund at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church until June 30th—applications must come from 501c3 groups and focus on projects that help local residents by supporting women, children and food banks. KIMA
- ➤ On June 15th at 2:59 p.m., 2,200 people gathered in Yakima for the Celebrate Democracy/No Kings rally — part of a nationwide movement with nearly 2,000 local events coordinated by Indivisible. Organizers said Yakima Indivisible has grown to over 1,600 members and formed subcommittees to work on civic projects like creating educational materials about the Constitution and launching a community forum series. - ➤ El Porton in Union Gap reopened last month after a 2022 fire and now serves customers on set weekend hours—recently, a new McDonald’s in Wapato had its groundbreaking with plans to open this fall while a Union Gap furniture store is closing and a Yakima Les Schwab Tires location will open on July 23. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today at 6:00 a.m. the first phase of roundabout construction will begin at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Washington Avenue as commercial trucks face a detour on 64th Avenue—other vehicles will go through temporary lane closures with on-site traffic control. The $1.47 million project is funded by the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board and the Legislature and is expected to finish in November. KIMA

- ➤ A study from the University of Chicago and Columbia found that eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains improved sleep quality on June 15 by reducing sleep fragmentation. Young adults logged their diets and wore wrist monitors to track sleep—experts said small changes in food may help people rest better. FOX 41

- ➤ White Swan couple Mickey and Karen Taylor bought a yearling for $17,500 at a public auction and later saw the colt, renamed Seattle Slew, win all three Triple Crown races to become the first undefeated champion.
