COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yakima Humane Society is partnering with Five Guys to host a fundraiser on Friday, July 11th from 5 to 7 pm at 1901 S 1st Street—15% of every sale will support care for local animals while visitors can meet adoptable pups.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Salvation Army Yakima Valley Corps will host a free family event on July 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 509 N. Fourth St. to launch its campaign for a new community center and Hope Market food pantry—construction will begin this fall with completion set for spring next year.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Yakima police reported that a 55-year-old woman named Dora is a missing endangered person; she was last seen on July 5 near MultiCare Memorial Hospital and is described as 4'11" tall and 120 pounds with cognitive and medical issues+ anyone with information is urged to call 911+ immediately.  NonStopLocal
  • Zillah police said two armed suspects tied up three Harvest Foods employees just before midnight on July 4 — officers broke a window to free them while the suspects remain at large with no injuries reported.  Apple Valley News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Washington Association of Wheat Growers supports Rep. Dan Newhouse’s bill on the House Agriculture Committee to strengthen the farm safety net and modernize agricultural policy—Michelle Henning said adjusting the wheat reference price to better cover production costs will help growers struggling with low prices.  NonStopLocal
  • GasBuddy data shows that gasoline prices in Yakima fell by 3.1 cents per gallon in the week since June 30th and averaged $4.08 per gallon as of July 7th—prices remain 6.7 cents higher than last month and 21.4 cents higher than last year.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Families in Yakima and Kittitas counties can now sign up to receive free English — Spanish books delivered monthly by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library through United Way. The service lets children enjoy age-appropriate books until they turn 5 and has secured state discretionary funds to keep the program running for another year.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • On July 7, Yakima Valley College held an Upward Bound lesson where over 30 high school students built remote-controlled cars to learn about college life (the federally funded program has helped low-income and first-generation students for over 40 years). The program will add a STEM plane assembly session and a visit to the Museum of Flight to show more college opportunities.  FOX 41

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Growers in Yakima Valley have faced a three-year drought that cut water allocations to 45% of the usual amount, the Bureau of Reclamation said on Thursday. Rob Valicoff, owner of Valicoff Fruit, said the dry weather hurt his orchard and local groups are working to find long-term fixes.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Officials from the State Fire Marshal’s Office urged residents to develop and practice fire escape plans and to test smoke alarms monthly—especially including drills for service animals.
