COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 16, the Yakima School District and Second Harvest teamed up to feed 250 families at Davis High School in Yakima. Organizers plan another Mobile Market event in December—urging local families in need to access food resources at local food banks.  Apple Valley News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, a 14-acre wildfire sparked by a fire at a homeless encampment near the wastewater treatment plant on East Viola Avenue led to evacuations along the Yakima River near the Nob Hill overpass on I-82, and firefighters have contained 50% of the blaze while protecting a nearby restaurant from embers & using a helicopter to dump water on the fire, with no injuries reported.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

CRIME NEWS

  • A Buckley man with past DUI convictions, Reece Forrest Perkins, was charged with vehicular homicide for a July 10 crash near Naches when his 1988 Jeep hit a motorcycle at about 7:45 p.m. — the 44-year-old rider died at the scene.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Jose Alonso Ocampo, 52, was charged with methamphetamine and fentanyl dealing and unlawful firearm possession after Yakima police and the DEA arrested him on July 9 during a traffic stop — officers found over three pounds of meth, 100 grams of fentanyl, digital scales, packaging materials, and a .22-caliber rifle, and he posted $10,000 bail on July 10.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Yakima Valley Tourism reported that the Yakima wine region was nominated for USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards for Best Wine Region and people can vote daily until July 21—over 90 local wineries produce award-winning wines in a sunny valley with ideal conditions for grape growing.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yakima firefighters continued to monitor hot spots from a wildfire that burned 14 acres along the Yakima River and threatened a truck stop near Interstate 82. The fire started Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-sanctioned homeless encampment on East Viola Avenue and led to a Level 3 evacuation that was lifted at 11 a.m. Wednesday — crews from Yakima and regional departments used two state helicopters for water drops.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal officials announced a nationwide recall of 67,000 cases of Power Stick roll-on deodorants after detecting trace amounts of benzene that may lead to cancer—local shoppers are urged to check their products and request refunds if necessary.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Yakima County Coroner Marshal Slight said that with the border closed, overdose deaths are expected to drop this year as 64 people have died so far compared to 80 at the same time last year—after a record 146 deaths were reported in 2024.   • Caroline Noble, a regulatory affairs manager and mother, almost lost her job after a drug test detected THC following her use of CBD gummies labeled 'THC free' from Cannaray. She is now campaigning for mandatory warnings on such products + urging manufacturers to clearly disclose any trace levels of THC to prevent future cases.  FOX 41
