EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mabton School District lost $421,049 in federal funds and ended last year with a negative balance of $951,745—this forced the district to lay off four classified staff members and cut programs like Migrant Education and supplemental learning, though sports will continue as planned. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yakima County Fire District 5 fought two brush fires yesterday off State Route 241—about 12 miles north of Sunnyside. The fires burned 20 and 45 acres and crews used water tenders, a bulldozer, and two helicopters near electrical transmission lines.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington public radio stations face major funding cuts after Congress approved a bill to rescind CPB funds — KDNA in Lower Yakima Valley may lose 40% of its annual budget, which could force staff layoffs and shift its live broadcasts to preprogrammed content that may affect emergency alerts.  Yakima Herald-Republic
