- ➤ Volunteers with Freedom Kits of Yakima celebrated 10 years of making washable feminine hygiene kits during a workshop at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church last Saturday; about 40 locals sewed and assembled the kits to help women and girls facing period poverty. The group has made nearly 24,000 kits over the decade—donating them both locally and internationally to support education and health. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ Ford recalled over 694,000 vehicles—Ford Bronco Sports from 2021 to 2024 and Ford Escapes from 2020 to 2022—for a potential fire risk from fuel injector cracks, and the company will send safety notices on August 18 while no injuries were reported. FOX 41
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Yakima Police reported that officers found a 35-year-old man with a gunshot wound at 6:25 p.m. on July 22nd near Miller Park at 502 N 4th St.—rescue efforts by Yakima Fire and police could not save him and detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward. FOX 41
- ➤ A Sunnyside man was jailed after police responded around 1:11 a.m. on July 20 to a domestic dispute call at a home on Yakima Valley Highway where officers found two handguns, one rifle and 11.8 ounces of cocaine, and he faced charges for harassment, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine. - ➤ Heritage University's new president — Christopher Gilmer — started on July 1 and said he will work hard for students by meeting them where they are. He came from Tougaloo College and has spent over 20 years helping students in need as he replaces Andrew Sund in Toppenish. Yakima Herald-Republic
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington State Patrol will deploy extra patrols during the Water Follies weekend from July 25 to 27 to check for speeding, impaired and aggressive driving as heavy traffic and many spectators raise risks around Columbia Park. Troopers will use unmarked cars, motorcycles and WSP Aviation for day and night patrols while road closures on the park's main entrance and an off‐ramp are set for July 26 and 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.—officials advise planning for safe transport. - ➤ City officials announced that construction at Yakima airport will begin on Monday, July 28 as part of a project to replace three canopies in front of the terminal, which will close some parking and pick-up areas. A drop-off zone and travel lane will remain but be reduced in size while a new roof and HVAC are scheduled to be completed by the end of October. Yakima Herald-Republic
