BUSINESS NEWS

  • Property east of the Yakima Air Terminal is being redeveloped as The Landing with nine lots for small businesses. Updated roads—sidewalks, streetlights, sewer, water and power—have been added to the site that once housed the Ding Ho restaurant, and the project aims to attract new tenants.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Burger Ranch on South 1st Street in Yakima will close on August 3. Locals are asked to share their views through a poll whose results will air on the 5 and 6 p.m. news — the community now discusses the restaurant's future.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • Yakima authorities identified Zuriel Pollicino, 21, fatally shot on July 24 outside a West Valley Taco Bell after an altercation—police also reported a separate shooting on July 22 that left Jorge Alvarado dead, marking the seventh homicide in the city this year—and are investigating both cases.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima Police are investigating two separate murders that occurred last week—21-year-old Zuriel Pollicino was fatally shot during an argument at a drive-thru on July 24, and 35-year-old Jorge Alvarado died at Miller Park on July 22 with suspects still at large.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gas prices in Yakima increased by 5.0 cents per gallon since July 21 and reached $4.04/g on July 28 according to GasBuddy's survey of 91 stations — the cheapest station was $3.30/g and the most expensive was $4.59/g — while prices remain 7.1 cents below last month and 14.0 cents above last year.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a special meeting on July 28, the Yakima City Council voted 4—3 to place a property tax levy on the November 4 ballot that could generate $6 million to cover a $9 million shortfall for 2026. The council will name community members to prepare voter pamphlets at its August 4 meeting.  FOX 41
  • The Washington Attorney General’s office started a sign-on process today asking cities and counties to join opioid settlements with Purdue Pharma and eight generic manufacturers to secure up to $122.2 million over a 15-year period. Governments must sign Purdue Pharma’s agreement by Sept. 30 while no deadline exists for the generics—50% of the total funds will be shared with local jurisdictions and 20% of the state share will support tribal programs—officials said.  NonStopLocal
  • The state has enacted 333 new laws that change rules for police funding, parking requirements, special education, and environmental standards. The changes include a $100 million public safety grant, new business and credit rules, and official recognition of Eid holidays—many measures will be phased in over the coming years.  KIMA
  • The Yakima city council approved a plan on July 24 to address a $9 million budget shortfall that includes a $50,000 cut to the Washington Fruit Community Center, which provides free fitness classes for seniors. Council member Matt Brown said the center will remain open—though some local residents have voiced concerns over the impact on these essential classes.  Apple Valley News Now
