COMMUNITY NEWS

  • National Night Out events will take place Aug. 4-5 across the Yakima Valley, with free gatherings offering food, crafts, games, and police-community activities—Yakima will feature a ribbon cutting for a new teen center at the Henry Beauchamp Community Center. Other towns including Union Gap, Wapato, Selah, Toppenish, Granger, Grandview, Sunnyside, Prosser, Ellensburg, and Cle Elum will host similar events with local police and organizers.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • This weekend Yakima will host many events as the Vintiques NW Nationals runs from Thursday through Sunday at State Fair Park with classic car displays, drag racing and live music, and Yakima Valley College will stage The Phantom of the Opera at Kendall Hall while Leo Adams opens his home for an art show and a barbecue fundraiser will take place at Sozo Sports Complex—additional free community events include music bingo, a children’s market and an outdoor art showcase.  Yakima Herald-Republic

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Rite Aid stores in Yakima will close soon as part of bankruptcy plans— the Scarborough Fair store will end pharmacy services on Sept. 4 and the West Nob Hill Boulevard store will close on Aug. 21. The Union Gap location will reopen as a CVS on Aug. 1.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Board of Yakima County Commissioners voted on July 29 to place a nonbinding advisory measure on the November ballot that will ask voters if the ban on cannabis production, processing, and retail sales in unincorporated areas should continue. The decision could affect county revenue since the ban keeps the county from receiving an estimated $400,000—$500,000 per year in cannabis taxes while over 60 businesses remain barred from entering the legal market.  KIMA
  • The Yakima City Council ended funding for the Crime Free Rental Program Tuesday, a move that may change how residents handle rental issues—more details will be provided during the 5 and 6 p.m. news.  KIMA
  • Yakima city council approved a levy expected to generate $6 million to help cover a projected $9 million budget shortfall in 2026 after a special meeting where finance director Craig Warner recommended budget cuts of $2.54 million—the council now will appoint community members to prepare voter pamphlets for both sides of the ballot measure at their August 4 meeting.  KIMA
