- ➤ The Moxee Hop Festival began Thursday night at Moxee City Park on Rivard and Highway 24 with music and food —free swimming was also offered— and continues today with live music and vendors. The event will finish tomorrow with a pancake breakfast fundraiser, a 5k run, and a parade that will benefit local sports groups. 1280 NewsTalk KIT
- ➤ On Aug. 4, the Opportunities Industrialization Center of Washington held a ribbon cutting at the Henry Beauchamp Community Center to launch the new James Parks Teen Center for teens ages 13 to 18. The center will officially open on Monday, Aug. 11 with free access from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and will offer mentoring, counseling, and games—like a pool table and foosball table—to help youth build life skills. - ➤ Yakima Police located missing mom Natasha and her children, 6-year-old Anastasia and 4-year-old Alejandro, today at 10:00 p.m.—they had been missing since August 4 and Natasha has dyed her hair blonde to aid in identification. FOX 41
- ➤ Yakima Police are asking the public for help in finding Natasha and her two children, 6 year old Anastasia and 4 year old Alejandro, who were last seen on August 4 after Natasha dyed her hair blonde plus they urge anyone with information to call 911 immediately. FOX 41
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bran Romero, a volunteer from the East Coast, spent several months in Yakima at Cowiche Canyon Conservancy doing bee surveys and conservation work. He served with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest under the guidance of local bee experts—teaching children about climate change and helping manage endangered species. Yakima Herald-Republic
- ➤ Since record keeping began in 1971, reservoir levels in the Yakima Basin dropped to 39% capacity on August 1 while non-senior water rights holders received only 40% of their water allotment and senior holders received full allocations—officials warn that worsening drought conditions may force fruit growers to use emergency groundwater and leasing if deliveries end early in September. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Yakima City Council approved a plan on Monday for six residents to write official voter guide statements for a $6 million tax levy set for the November ballot and explained that the decision will affect whether the city faces $9 million in cuts or a smaller $3 million cut package. The council also approved a request from the police to seek a $500,000 federal grant for cyber-enabled crimes while airport improvements funded by leftover federal money are underway — voters will decide the final budget path in November. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Yakima Health District is giving free water filters to 40 East Selah residents with private wells that have PFAs in their water—each filter removes PFAs and adds a separate faucet for safe drinking and cooking, available on a first come first serve basis. KIMA
