COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A partnership between Yakima Valley Habitat for Humanity and West Valley High School saw students from construction and welding classes build two playhouses as part of the Playhouses with a Purpose program. The playhouses are now available for purchase and online bidding continues until the end of the month—proceeds support the nonprofit. FOX 41
- ➤ West Valley High School students and Yakima Valley Habitat for Humanity finished a program building two playhouses for the community (teacher Stephen Matczak said the project grew students’ skills and leadership). The playhouses are for sale at the Habitat store and online bidding will run until the end of the month (all proceeds help support the nonprofit). NonStopLocal

- ➤ Officials with the Washington State Tree Fruit Association forecast 142 million boxes for the fresh apple crop this fall—if enough workers are available, the near-record yield depends on labor. Growers may pick selectively—reducing the final harvest despite strong growing conditions and rising demand for varieties like Cosmic Crisp. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ Les Schwab Tire Centers across the valley are hosting a 'Pack A Backpack' school supply drive to help local students by collecting new, unused supplies and monetary donations at store locations during business hours — weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drive partners with Fred Meyer and the Yakima Pippins to benefit the Yakima School District. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 1, water in Yakima Basin reservoirs was at its lowest since records began in 1971—39% full with 414781 acre-feet, or 55% of the normal level. Keechelus Lake was only 12% full, and the drought declared in 2023 has grown worse as water will later be drawn to help salmon and preserve irrigation. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ The Yakima County Auditor released a list showing that nearly a dozen November election positions have no candidates—these include town council seats in Harrah and Zillah, school board roles, fire district commissioner spots, and a Naches parks seat; next week the auditor’s office will open a filing window from the 11th through the 13th, and if no one applies, the incumbent or an appointee will remain in office. - ➤ Yakima Health District has started a free water filter program for East Selah households using private wells that show PFAS levels above health guidelines — filters are offered on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, with each household receiving a certified under-the-sink system and a free set of replacement filters for drinking and cooking water. 1280 NewsTalk KIT
- ➤ Yakima experts reported 31 overdoses in one week, two of them fatal, and first responders saved most patients with Narcan. Alicia Stromme Tobin of Safe Yakima Valley warned that planned federal funding cuts will nearly eliminate prevention programs + the community still lacks a medical detox facility. KIMA
- ➤ Astria Toppenish Hospital expanded its behavioral health program following a ribbon cutting for a new 14-bed unit and began plans to renovate its old 15-bed unit after moving patients into the new space. Hospital officials announced a 16-bed unit will open in 2027—this expansion will help meet the growing mental health needs in the Lower Yakima Valley. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ Nine year old Beckett Gwinn volunteered as a ball picker with his sister Myla at The Podium for the International Table Tennis event, where players from Israel and India are competing in five-set matches until Aug. 13. They help keep the match moving by quickly retrieving balls for para-athletes and other competitors while organizers seek more young volunteers. NonStopLocal
