- ➤ The Harman Center will host its first-ever Local Authors Book Fair on Saturday, September 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.—registrations with a $25 fee for display space are due by September 8th at 101 North 65th Ave. KIMA
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Imports at the Port of Seattle and Tacoma dropped 26% year-over-year and nearly 25% from last week + new tariffs have raised border costs by up to 20%, which is causing concern for businesses across Washington. Officials said the decrease is reducing the flow of goods and shipping options, including for local agricultural products. NonStopLocal
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An unidentified suspect was shot and killed during an encounter with police Saturday night near East Walnut Avenue and 3rd Street at 7:39 p.m.—a Yakima police officer was also shot and later released from the hospital. NonStopLocal
- ➤ On Saturday, police responded to a domestic violence shooting near West Washington Avenue that left a 33-year-old woman dead and a 13-year-old injured, then pursued a suspect on Yakima Avenue—officers used a K—9 during the chase and exchanged gunfire that injured an officer before the suspect was killed. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Basalt—a rock made by lava that cooled millions of years ago—marks many Yakima Valley landmarks like local churches and Millennium Plaza and was quarried from Cowiche Canyon; retired geologist Steven Reidel explained that the lava once covered 50,000 square miles and left a unique mark on the land. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Washington Department of Licensing is changing how it sends vehicle registration renewal notices by offering residents email notifications or postcards instead of full-size letters starting this month. If a vehicle has no parking or toll violations or safety recalls, residents will get a postcard with fee details + vehicle information, while driver license and ID renewals can be received by letter, postcard, or email, with in-person renewal required for those over 70.
