  • At Pioneer Power Days in Union Gap on Saturday, many tractors were shown at the Central Washington Agriculture Museum event—drawing local farming fans who shared stories about their old and restored machines. CRIME NEWS

  • A Toppenish man who shot at federal officers during a February 2024 standoff pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Aug. 11 to 16 1/2 years in prison plus 5 years of supervised release—federal prosecutors noted his long record and damage to two marked police vehicles—and his sentence reflects a strict punishment for violent crimes.  Yakima Herald-Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yakima schools use the Handle With Care program to alert teachers and counselors when police come to a student's home so they can quickly offer emotional support; the number of alerts has varied each school year. The program is now in its fifth year and gained more focus after a weekend domestic violence event—including a homicide on August 9—that affected some students and led school staff to work with local and tribal police.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington Broadband owner Forbes Mercy donated a $30,000 boom truck to Tieton on Tuesday as his company sold its fiber and cable division to Spectrum and scaled back its construction team — easing the town’s need to hire contractors for public work tasks. Tieton officials said a former employee will soon train staff to operate the truck to help with tree trimming, hanging lights, and other maintenance work.  Yakima Herald-Republic

SPORTS NEWS

  • Yakima hosted its first sprint boat racing event at State Fair Park after converting an old track with a $500,000 investment—qualifications began yesterday and eliminations are taking place today as part of the American Sprint Boat Racing series. Future race weekends are scheduled for next June and August as the new track joins the ASBR circuit.  Yakima Herald-Republic
