ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Yakima Fire Department responded at 5:08 a.m. on August 21 to a fire on a play structure at McGuire Park on the greenway and worked until 6:17 a.m. to ensure it was out — they urged drivers on I-82 to pass carefully.  NonStopLocal
  • A fire burned the Sunrise Park Playground at Yakima Greenway on Thursday—investigators are checking the cause as it is the third or fourth time the park has burned after $350,000 in damage last year.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Yakima Fire Department responded to a play structure fire at McGuire Park on August 21st at about 5:08 a.m.—firefighters found the play structure fully involved and stayed on scene until at least 6:17 a.m., asking drivers on Interstate 82 to use caution.  FOX 41

CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect in murder homicides in Granger and Toppenish fled arrest in Walla Walla County after police linked him to the deaths of 51-year-old Miguel Angel Cruz-Cid and 22-year-old Jorge Vasquez Gutierrez—Washington State Patrol chased him until he crashed.  NonStopLocal
  • The Yakima Fire Department responded to a blaze at Rotary Playground in McGuire Park on the Yakima Greenway on August 21 at 5:08 a.m.—investigators suspected arson as the Tot Lot was destroyed, no one was injured, and crews stayed for an hour and a half to check for rekindling.  NonStopLocal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pacific Northwest University opened its new dental school today on the Terrace Heights campus—its first class of 36 students will train to serve Yakima and surrounding rural communities. The program will expand hands-on care with community clinics projected to begin in January, aiming to provide over 18,000 visits annually.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Multiple fires occurred this summer at Rocky Top Environmental, a landfill west of Yakima owned by DTG, when workers moved material to a lined cell and used fire suppression measures to manage spontaneous burns. A state pollution board upheld proper permit reviews after a citizens' group appealed—Yakima Health District is now studying how to enforce the new landfill rules.  Yakima Herald-Republic
