BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business is booming in Naches as Oak Creek Distillery will open on Labor Day weekend, led by local owners Mike and Annette Hatten who also run Bron Yr Aur Brewing Co. The distillery will serve American single malt whiskey, bourbon, and other spirits with a full gastropub menu — plans that aim to boost local trade.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • A fire on August 21 destroyed the Yakima play structure at Rotary Park along the Yakima Greenway and officials suspect arson while Rotary club leaders say no rebuild plans have been made yet — damage is estimated at $500,000.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gail Gregory, a second grade teacher at Hilton Elementary in Zillah, won Education Service District 105’s Regional Teacher of the Year and will compete for Washington State Teacher of the Year in the fall—she has taught for 35 years in the district.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Dan Newhouse got $5 million in federal money in 2022 and 2023—money that is now helping pay for upgrades at Yakima Air Terminal, airport director Rob Hodgman said.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • With students starting classes today in Yakima and nearby districts, Yakima Police urge drivers to slow to 20 mph in school zones and to obey stop signs to keep children safe. Drivers who speed may face double fines—averaging over $180—while police remind motorists to stay alert around crossing children.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Washington State Department of Transportation is closing the Interstate 82 westbound off-ramp to North First Street for emergency repairs to fix a bridge expansion joint. The closure begins at 8 a.m. today and will continue until Friday, Aug. 29—drivers should follow the detour route as announced.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • The American Red Cross in Yakima is asking for donors to help keep the blood supply strong, especially those with O positive and B negative blood. Donors from Aug.29 to Sept.21 will get a PEANUTS mystery bag with a special T-shirt design—check for a golden ticket—and should schedule an appointment soon.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Triumph Treatment Services is hosting a free event at Sarg Hubbard Park on Friday to honor loved ones lost to drug overdose — the schedule includes free coffee and doughnuts at 10 a.m., a speaker program at 11 a.m., and a memory wall social from 1 to 2. Yakima Recovery Events will light up the A.E. Larson Building purple — a tribute that marks the day as one of remembrance and community support.  Yakima Herald-Republic
