  • Yakima Humane Society is caring for a kitten who has only been at the shelter briefly—she is full of energy and waiting for a forever home. The shelter hopes she will soon find a loving family.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • A Grandview man, Felix Angiano III, is accused of hitting and killing his dating partner Jorge Estrada-Martinez in a drunken driving crash on Wednesday night in Sunnyside—state troopers say the incident occurred at the eastbound Interstate 82 on-ramp at Waneta Road and that he will appear in Yakima County Superior Court Thursday afternoon.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Jorge Martinez, 29, died at an I-82 ramp near Sunnyside at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when his boyfriend, 31-year-old Felix Angiano—who reportedly argued with him before the crash—struck him, and police arrested Angiano on charges of Vehicular Homicide while under the influence.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Yakima Police identified Reylinda Alvarado, a 34-year-old caught on video stealing a purse at a local grocery store and allegedly taking credit cards and checks, and they urge women today to keep their purses secure—call 9-1-1 with any tips.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

  • Yakima County schools are limiting cellphone use in classrooms to help students focus on learning. East Valley, Sunnyside, Wapato and Yakima schools have set rules that allow phones only during lunch—teachers say students work better when phones are hidden.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wildcat Fire near Bumping Lake doubled from 2,500 to 5,542 acres on Thursday under hot dry conditions—officials raised evacuation levels for Goose Prairie and Bumping River Road as firefighters battled intense flames and rugged terrain. HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study found that community hospitals kept many severe trauma patients—more than half were not moved to higher-level centers, and elderly and public insurance patients often stayed at lower-level facilities despite needing advanced care.  FOX 41
  • A new clinical trial published on Sept. 4 shows that one dose of benzathine penicillin G works as well as the traditional three dose treatment—researchers say this simplified plan could ease drug shortages and lower the risk of antibiotic resistance. More studies are needed to check if the one dose regimen will work for later stages of the infection.  FOX 41
