CRIME NEWS

  • Martha Bassett, a Yakama Nation citizen murdered in 1968 and recently identified through DNA testing, will be brought home on Wednesday as relatives and officials escort her remains from Chicago to the Yakama Reservation—where traditional services and a Friday burial at Union Gap cemetery are planned.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Fourteen Yakima police officers involved in a downtown shooting on Aug. 9 are back on duty—after being on paid administrative leave. A State Patrol investigation is ongoing and the case will be reviewed by Yakima County prosecutors.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Angelica Ramirez, 29, a Yakima gang member linked to the fatal shooting at Eisenhower High and other incidents since 2021, entered Alford pleas for charges including second-degree assault, felony harassment, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree robbery—receiving a 57-month concurrent prison sentence.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Peers Rising, a nonprofit organization, opened its fourth recovery support center and first in Yakima to help individuals, youth, and families facing substance or alcohol use disorder. The center—operating Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—offers resources, referrals, and events for supportive recovery.  FOX 41
  • Health officials in Yakima note rising suicides and overdose deaths—county data show 43 suicides in 2024 and 23 so far this year, with overdose deaths at 77 this year after a record 146 in 2024.   • Federal officials investigated radioactive contamination in frozen shrimp after more than 300 shipping containers from Indonesia were recalled due to detections of Cesium-137—no contaminated shrimp was sold as the FDA blocked shipments. The agency warned that long-term exposure to Cesium-137 could be a health risk.  FOX 41
